How to Set Up a Portrait Monthly Planner

Monthly Planner · Portrait filled digital layout on a warm background

Mark the month in the 1–12 selector, keep the year in an accompanying note, and place day 1 under the correct weekday. Number the five-row grid before adding short events. The portrait page stays upright in the binder, but its 35 boxes still need an overflow plan for six-row months.

Why an upright monthly page needs short entries

A portrait month keeps the calendar in the binder's usual upright reading direction. Its narrow weekday boxes make concise entries useful. If a note needs several lines of detail, give it a reference on the calendar and keep the fuller explanation elsewhere.

Set up the dates before writing events. A small calendar can look orderly even when the first date starts under the wrong weekday. A year note also matters: the same month begins on a different weekday in different years.

Try the method on a plain five-row grid: label the month, check the first weekday and number the dates. The product supplies the printed structure; it does not verify the dates you add.

The current approved portrait design has month numbers 1–12 near the top, Sunday-first day initials and a five-row calendar with 35 boxes. Both A7 and M5 preserve that structure. It is not a six-row version of the landscape page.

Component What to do Example
1–12 selector Circle or mark the chosen month 10 for October
Day initials Read Sunday through Saturday S M T W T F S
Date boxes Add dates before events 1 under Thursday
Accompanying note Keep year and any overflow October 2026

The repeated S and T initials are resolved by their positions: the first S is Sunday, the last S Saturday, and the two Ts are Tuesday and Thursday. Do not choose a column by the initial alone.

Set up the portrait month in five steps

  • Choose the month. Mark 10 in the selector for this example. Keep “2026” in an accompanying note because no year field is printed.
  • Verify the first weekday. October 1, 2026 is Thursday, so day 1 begins in the fifth column from the left.
  • Number all actual dates. Continue through 31 without shifting the weekday sequence. October's offset 4 plus 31 days uses all 35 positions exactly.
  • Add short labels. Use “Call” or “Trip” for the teaching example and keep detailed times or instructions elsewhere.
  • Check month capacity and hand off detail. If another month needs six rows, keep overflow dates on a clearly dated note or use another calendar layout. Transfer next week's events into its working view.

A filled-in example

Illustrative example: the selector marks October, the first date sits under Thursday and 31 finishes under Saturday in the fifth row. “Call” and “Trip” are synthetic short entries. The numbers fit the real printed boxes; the image does not add an unprinted sixth row.

The next action is to verify a short event against the fuller calendar or appointment record before copying it to a weekly page. “Call” is a useful prompt only if you can retrieve its actual time and subject elsewhere.

For a six-row month, use an overflow note with date and weekday labels. For example, May 2026 begins Friday and ends with Sunday May 31 in a sixth row. That last date cannot be made to fit by moving it into Saturday's box. Keep it explicitly outside the grid or choose a six-row calendar.

Three ways to keep the boxes useful

Appointments: a short name in the date box, with exact time in a weekly or daily record.

Deadline overview: a due-date label, with preparation tasks scheduled separately.

Family or work reference: use brief identifiers and a simple key if needed. Keep sensitive detail out of a portable planner.

Leave leading and trailing positions outside the month blank or clearly excluded. A blank box before day 1 is not a missing date. Do not use it as overflow without a clear date and weekday convention that preserves accuracy.

Calendar setup is a recording task

Jane's Agenda's monthly setup guide treats the monthly overview as one part of a wider setup. This compact page likewise works best when detailed tasks and longer records have their own place. No scientific effect is claimed for circling a selector or writing short event labels.

The calendar does not send reminders, automatically resolve conflicts or establish that a planned event happened. Use another reminder system when the event needs one.

Design notes: a stable upright overview

The approved October 2 portrait design keeps a 1–12 month selector, Sunday-first headings and five rows on each side. Narrow columns support short month-level entries rather than full daily schedules. The A7 and M5 versions have their own finished dimensions while retaining the same calendar job and mirrored binding geometry. The source is the approved portrait master, not a calendar image redrawn by a generator. These design facts do not demonstrate physical pen performance, printed appearance or cross-brand binder fit.

Common mistakes and a final date check

  • Forgetting year context: keep it with the page.
  • Choosing a column from a repeated initial alone: read the full weekday order.
  • Assuming portrait means six rows: it also has 35 boxes.
  • Writing detail too small to read: use a short reference and another page.

Verify day 1, a middle-week date and the final date before using the page. Check any overflow note at the same time, then keep the calendar as the month overview.

Choose A7 or M5 for this page

Choose the size that matches your existing binder: A7 / Pocket is 80 × 120 mm with six holes; M5 / Mini 5 is 67 × 105 mm with five holes. Front and reverse keep the same page function with mirrored binding margins. A7 gives you a larger surface for handwriting. M5 makes the page smaller; it does not make every field larger or fit an A7 binder.

Compare the finished dimensions and complete hole pattern with a refill that already fits. Current listing specifications use 19 mm consecutive hole spacing; a matching number of holes alone is not proof of compatibility across brands.

Current listing prices checked October 6, 2026: A7 / Pocket $6.99 USD; M5 / Mini 5 $5.99 USD. The pack contains 15 double-sided sheets on 120 gsm paper. Binder, pens, stickers and other accessories are separate. Each side provides another page of this layout.

Allow 3–5 business days for processing where stated on the listing; processing is separate from transit. Digital product previews and public availability do not establish physical print, writing or binder-fit QA, or on-hand inventory. Check the current product page before ordering.

FAQ

Is there a printed year field?

No. Keep year context in an accompanying note or clear date convention.

Does portrait have a sixth row?

No. The current portrait layout also has five rows and 35 boxes. Use a dated companion note for overflow or choose a six-row layout.

What do repeated S and T initials mean?

Read left to right as Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday. The Sunday-first sequence resolves the repeated initials.
