How to Make a Custom List in Your Pocket Planner

List of ( ) filled digital layout on a warm background

Write one subject inside the open “List of ( )” title, then keep every row within that subject. Choose whether bracket marks mean packed, checked, numbered or something else, and use that convention consistently. A custom list supplies a named home for information that does not need a dedicated task, grocery or reading layout.

Why a list needs a name before it needs a mark

A page of unrelated items can be difficult to review. “Charger,” “Call shop” and “Book recommendation” ask for different kinds of action. A subject at the top tells you what belongs together and what question the page should answer.

Choose one scope: packing, places to visit, questions to research or a small reference collection. A list can store information without being a list of tasks. The brackets do not require every row to be completed or ticked.

Try the method on any lined paper by giving it a title and adding three entries. If the entries need different fields, use a dedicated page instead. The custom title is useful when a neutral list is enough.

The approved page reads “List of ( )” with space to write the subject. Each row begins with light brackets and an open writing line. A7 has ten rows per printed side; M5 has nine. The artwork has no printed background fill; the illustration shows a digital page surface, not a promised paper shade.

Part What to record Example
Title blank One subject Packing
Writing line A recognizable item or note Charger
Bracket area A defined optional mark Tick = packed

The brackets are not preprinted square checkboxes. They can hold a tick, number, symbol or a small dot sticker according to your convention. The listing describes space for a 5 mm dot sticker, sold separately; sticker behavior on physical paper still needs testing.

Build a custom list in five steps

  • Name the subject. Write Packing in the title for this example. Keep trip details in an accompanying note if the page will be reused or archived.
  • Write recognizable entries. Use Charger, Notebook, Water bottle and Light jacket. Add a detail when several similar items could be confused.
  • Define the mark. Here a tick means physically packed, not merely owned, found or planned.
  • Mark after the relevant event. Check Charger and Notebook only after they are in the bag. Leave the others open until resolved.
  • Review the remaining entries. Check whether the list is complete for this trip, then carry or archive it according to its future use.

A filled-in example

List of ( ) illustrative filled example

Illustrative example: the title is Packing. Charger and Notebook have ticks inside their brackets; Water bottle and Light jacket remain open. The marks show the example's packed status, not a customer's actual bag or a guarantee that the list contains everything needed.

The next action is checking the two open entries and the trip requirements. An item can be deliberately removed if it is no longer needed; use a different mark or clear note rather than calling it packed.

A reusable master packing reference may have no ticks at all. Keep the master list separate from a specific trip's status so old checks do not falsely suggest the current bag is ready.

Three subjects, three different keys

Packing: tick = packed. Write concrete items and keep the trip context nearby.

Questions to research: number the brackets for retrieval, then put answers on a note page. A number identifies the question; it does not mean answered unless the key says so.

Places to visit: leave the brackets empty for a reference list, or use a defined visited mark. The page is a collection of possibilities, not a commitment to visit everything.

Keep one subject and one mark convention per page. If you need a store, expected price and acquired status, Wish List offers those dedicated prompts. If you need items and quantities for a shopping trip, Grocery List has the × field. If you need action completion only, To Do may be clearer.

A flexible collection has a limited job

Bullet Journal's official beginner guide introduces a wider system of logs, collections and marks. This JOYJOY page is a simpler named-list option; using it does not mean you must adopt that entire method or its exact symbols.

No scientific claim is needed to explain a title and repeated lines. This guide does not promise better memory, attention or productivity from the paper. The useful test is whether you can find the entries and understand the marks later.

Design notes: make the subject user-defined

The approved List of design replaces a fixed list category with an open parenthetical title. Light bracket markers leave numbering, status or decoration optional, and the artwork contains no background tint. The final approved capacity is ten A7 rows or nine M5 rows; earlier airy eight/seven-row review concepts are not used. Front and reverse repeat the same neutral list function with mirrored binding geometry. These are documented design facts, not an invented founder account or a physical handwriting, print or sticker test.

Common mistakes and a list review

  • Mixing subjects: move unrelated entries to their own named page.
  • Treating every bracket as compulsory completion: choose the key that suits the list.
  • Reusing old packed ticks for a new trip: separate reference and current status.
  • Assuming a custom list supplies missing fields: choose a dedicated layout when needed.

At review, ask whether the title still describes every entry and whether the marks remain clear. Keep useful references, carry forward relevant open items and archive the rest when they no longer serve the working binder.

Choose A7 or M5 for this page

Choose the size that matches your existing binder: A7 / Pocket is 80 × 120 mm with six holes; M5 / Mini 5 is 67 × 105 mm with five holes. Front and reverse keep the same page function with mirrored binding margins. A7 gives you a larger surface for handwriting. M5 makes the page smaller; it does not make every field larger or fit an A7 binder.

Compare the finished dimensions and complete hole pattern with a refill that already fits. Current listing specifications use 19 mm consecutive hole spacing; a matching number of holes alone is not proof of compatibility across brands.

Current listing prices checked October 6, 2026: A7 / Pocket $6.99 USD; M5 / Mini 5 $5.99 USD. The pack contains 15 double-sided sheets on 120 gsm paper. Binder, pens, stickers and other accessories are separate. Each side provides another page of this layout.

Allow 3–5 business days for processing where stated on the listing; processing is separate from transit. Digital product previews and public availability do not establish physical print, writing or binder-fit QA, or on-hand inventory. Check the current product page before ordering.

FAQ

Are these square checkboxes?

The approved layout uses light bracket markers. You can place a tick, number, dot sticker or another defined mark in them.

Does List of need to be a task list?

No. It can hold reference items, ideas or a collection. Leave markers empty when no status is needed.

How is it different from Grocery List?

List of has a custom title and general lines; Grocery List adds the dedicated × quantity field for shopping.
